What if your dreams aren't what you think they are? What if they're not messages, not insights, but something else entirely?
Let me unpack this nightly phenomenon from my perspective. When I was young. I used to believe my dreams were an escape from reality. Then I grew up some and felt they held profound secrets, hinting at the fluid future or buried past. But then I encountered UG Krishnamurti, and his 'anti-dream' philosophy completely flipped my world upside down. He argued that dreams are static and not symbolic messages from the subconscious. They are simply the brain's "junk" processing – a physiological byproduct, akin to a computer defragging.
And I get that.
I feel dreams appear to us as a single data file in black-and-white, displaying various events. When we become aware of it or try to recount it, we sort it. Meaning, we consciously stack it and color it. Not to make sense, but just so we can verbalize it.
Sigmund Freud in his work, The Interpretation of Dreams, proposed that dreams are fulfillments of unconscious wishes.
I don't think so. Dreams mostly have no coherence and continuity. You would know if you have ever woken up wondering what that crazy dream was all about. Freud's draw on manifested vs. latent content of dreams did resonate with me. Manifested being what you remember and Latent being what's hidden.
The scientific community argues that dreams are a product of our memory and imagination. Similar to UG's take in some sense. While Puranas from Indic culture suggest the universe is the Creator's dream, and we are fictional characters playing the game of life in it.
After studying different interpretations and explanations for dreams, I broadened my understanding. Refining my take into a healthy blend of philosophy, metaphysics, and quantum principles. "Dreams are a memory overlap. A glimpse into how we exist in parallel universes."
Let me break it down. Every choice we make alters our reality slightly, forking us into a new parallel. Over time, our lives become vividly different from what it would have been if we had endured whatever came our way. Life would have been simpler and shorter, even. Since we are programmed to fight for survival, we can't help but make choices that favor us. Now, our current life resembles the recently forked one closely. And it is vastly different from the one that's further away. Similarly, our dreams appear abstract or senseless if it is the memory of our life that's furthest from our current one.
If you have a hard time making sense of my perspective, then make your own or choose from the following:
UG Krishnamurti- Dreams hold no deeper meaning or spiritual significance; clinging to them as such is an illusion that perpetuates suffering.
Sigmund Freud - Dreams allow repressed desires to surface in a form that the conscious mind can tolerate while hiding the true meaning.
Neuroscience - Dreams result from bursts of activity in the brain's memory center, creating chemical shifts in the body.
Metaphysical - Dreams connect you to the universal consciousness, exposing what can't be experienced through sensory perceptions.
Happy dreaming!
